Hamlet Petrosyan was born in Guymri, Armenian on October 18, 1975.  He started in the sport of boxing at the young age of 10, and trained under renowned Armenian trainer Manvel Gabrielian.

His talents were evident from the beginning.  As he grew and became a seasoned amateur with over 150 bouts under his belt (with a win ration of over 95%), he won 5 Armenian National Championships along the way.

His amateur experience consists of appearances in International tournaments (where he earned 1st and 2nd place finishes), European Tournaments and World Championship Tournaments.  He performed very well in these events and in 2001 turned professional.
